VOTERS FIGHT BACK

After a historically successful election, Michigan Republicans are trying to make it harder to vote.

A huge majority – nearly 67% – of Michigan voters supported expanding our access to the ballot through the Promote the Vote Proposal 3 ballot initiative in 2018. More than 5.5 million Michiganders exercised their constitutional right to vote in the 2020 presidential election — the most ever and the highest percentage of voting-age residents to cast a ballot in 60 years. Of those voters, 3.2 million cast their ballot by absentee. Over 250 audits at state and local levels showed that this election was safe, secure, and accurate.

But now, Senate Republicans have introduced a package of anti-voter bills with the mission to make it harder to vote and restrict eligible people’s constitutional right to vote. These efforts are part of a larger strategy by national special interests to suppress the vote, similar to what we’re seeing in Georgia.

Senate Bills 273-311 would create unnecessary regulation, red tape, and restrictions on our elections. Voters Not Politicians volunteers are getting the word out about these bills through many tactics including online advocacy, writing letters to editors of local publications, distributing informational literature to constituents of these legislators, and making phone calls to lawmakers to urge them to oppose this legislation.

Voters Not Politicians believes that in order for democracy to work for us, it must include all of us. We must protect the freedom to vote and ensure every eligible voice is heard. Our organization was founded on the principle that voters should choose their politicians, not the other way around. Together, voters and activists in Michigan can move our state forward — not backward — by creating a process where every eligible person can safely and freely cast their ballot.

What’s included in Senate Bills 273-311? Expand

Some of the worst things these bills would do include:

  • Senate Bill 285 makes it harder to vote using an absentee ballot by forcing you to show a specific type of photo ID in order to request an absentee ballot. If you are requesting a ballot by mail, you need a printer with ink just to make a copy of your ID.
  • Senate Bill 286 removes your right to return your absentee ballot to a drop box after 5pm the day before election day.
  • Senate Bill 287 forces you to pay to return your absentee ballot by mail by banning clerks from providing prepaid postage on return envelopes
  • Senate Bill 297 creates unnecessary red tape that makes it harder for clerks to conduct their work by creating a partisan board to review and approve who the clerks hire to help them.
  • Senate Bill 303 forces voters to carry a specific type of ID to vote in person. If a voter cannot provide that ID, they are forced to cast a provisional ballot.
  • Senate Bill 304 places extreme burdens on voters who cast a provisional ballot
  • Senate Bill 310 bans the Secretary of State from sending absentee ballot applications to all voters or from providing a link to the online application on the Secretary’s website.

How is VNP going to fight back? Expand

Voters Not Politicians is already working on efforts to fight back against this legislation.

Since the bills were introduced:

  • We launched a digital outreach program to raise awareness and engage even more people in direct action
  • We’re hosting legislative information calls to share the latest news and updates on this anti-voter effort
  • We hosted a letter-writing workshop to help volunteers send direct letters to lawmakers and local publications
  • We’re coordinating a massive literature drop to alert constituents in the districts of lawmakers who introduced the legislation
  • Our regional teams are scheduling phone banks once lawmakers return to Lansing after spring break
  • We will continue to build up volunteer teams at the local level so we’re ready to take immediate action when the time comes. Sign up to become part of our volunteer army to be there for it!
What is the Michigan Republican Party’s plan? Expand

On March 25, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser defiantly announced that Republicans will pursue a blatant, anti-democratic strategy to get around the Governor’s veto. "If [the package’s] not signed by the governor, then we have other plans to make sure that it becomes law before 2022," Weiser said. "That plan includes taking that legislation and getting the signatures necessary for a legislative initiative so it can become law without Gretchen Whitmer's signature."

Michigan’s Constitution allows a controversial procedure where, if Republicans can collect 340,047 signatures through a petition drive, the House and Senate can enact the voter suppression laws without the Governor having the power to veto it.

The mechanism is called the “indirect initiative statute.” With a population of 10 million residents in the state, that means Republicans need to gather signatures from just 3.4% of the population to make it harder for all voters to exercise our Constitutional right to vote.
