DIAL FOR DEMOCRACY

Activists across the political spectrum can all agree that picking up the phone and calling your elected officials is one of the most effective ways to make your voice heard. In fact, many elected officials and their staff members have stated that a phone call from a constituent holds more weight than an email, tweet, or a fax (source).

Members of Voters Not Politician's "Dial for Democracy" list receive exclusive alerts when it's time to call your lawmakers on legislation or decisions that impact Michigan's democracy. These alerts will contain info and tips to help you have an easy and productive call to your local lawmaker!

Below are the important issues our team is dialing up on!

Senate Republican's Anti-Voter Package Expand

Description:

About these bills:

  • Senate Bill 285 makes it harder to vote using an absentee ballot by forcing you to show a specific type of photo ID in order to request an absentee ballot. If you are requesting a ballot by mail, you need a printer with ink just to make a copy of your ID.
  • Senate Bill 286 removes your right to return your absentee ballot to a drop box after 5pm the day before election day.
  • Senate Bill 287 forces you to pay to return your absentee ballot by mail by banning clerks from providing prepaid postage on return envelopes
  • Senate Bill 297 creates unnecessary red tape that makes it harder for clerks to conduct their work by creating a partisan board to review and approve who the clerks hire to help them.
  • Senate Bill 303 forces voters to carry a specific type of ID to vote in person. If a voter cannot provide that ID, they are forced to cast a provisional ballot.
  • Senate Bill 304 places extreme burdens on voters who cast a provisional ballot
  • Senate Bill 310 bans the Secretary of State from sending absentee ballot applications to all voters or from providing a link to the online application on the Secretary’s website.
