During a Voters Not Politicans press call Monday morning, Ruth Greenwood, director of the Election Law Clinic at Harvard Law School, said it’s very possible for the commission to come up with maps that are politically fair while meeting other requirements.
“There are probably millions and millions of maps that would satisfy all of the criteria that would be fair from a partisan sense, but they would also protect communities of color and comply with the other criteria,” Greenwood said. “So then it’s just a matter of the commission getting together and hearing comments from people to decide which of these many millions of maps do we think really suits Michigan in the next decade.”
Greenwood and Voters Not Politicians Executive Director Nancy Wang praised the openness of deliberations on partisan fairness and other issues with the maps, contrasting the process with other states negotiating lines behind closed doors with outsized influence from political parties in the majority.
