Commission Begins Drawing Congressional Districts, Will Now Meet on Fridays

The Michigan Independent Citizen’s Redistricting Commission has begun drafting Congressional district maps Thursday afternoon, with Commissioners Clark and Vallette drawing the first district in East Detroit. This draft district included Warren, the Grosse Pointes, and Downriver cities such as Allen Park, Melvindale, and Ecorse. The next district, drawn by Commissioner Weiss, included the Western half of Detroit along with Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Romulus, Taylor, Livonia, and surrounding suburbs. Commissioner Witjes began drafting a district in Oakland County, but will continue to make edits during their evening session at 5 PM.

The commission also voted to include Fridays as an additional day to draft maps after a discussion of adding more time to the calendar. The details of these meetings will be discussed next week after communication with the venues.
