Shawn Manley, Detroit (VNP Region 6 - Wayne County)

I am Shawn Manley. I have lived and worked in Detroit all my life, and I own a home in the same West Side neighborhood where I grew up.   I learned about gerrymandering, and how it undermines democracy, in my high school civics class. I realized the process was not right. I joined Voters not Politicians during the signature drive to get the amendment for fair electoral districts on the 2018 Michigan ballot, and am now a member of their volunteer advisory council.  I am a notary public, and I help with notarizing applications for the new  Citizens Redistricting Commission. Being a part of Voters not Politicians gives me the chance to put the voting power back in the people’s hands.

Currently, I work in an after-school and vacation program with Detroit children to ensure that they receive nutritious meals all year long. I have also volunteered with the 14th  Congressional District of Michigan, the Virtual Dialysis Support Center, and taught vacation Bible school. I love being active and giving back to my community because it has given so much to me.
