The League of Women Voters of Michigan, the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, Common Cause, The Leadership Now Project, Issue One, Equal Citizens Foundation, The Center For The Study Of The Presidency And Congress, and Represent Us this week filed amicus briefs with the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in the Daunt, et al v. Benson and Michigan Republican Party v. Benson lawsuits. The Campaign Legal Center with noted litigator Paul Smith and Fraser Trebilcock serve as counsel on the case for Voters Not Politicians.
The following can be attributed to Nancy Wang, executive director of Voters Not Politicians:
“We appreciate these groups joining with Voters Not Politicians and the State of Michigan to support the will of Michigan’s voters in establishing a fair, impartial, and transparent redistricting process. The Michigan Republican Party and others are trying to use the courts to overturn the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission so that politicians can go back to drawing election districts that serve themselves and political parties – not the voters of Michigan. Their claims lack merit and we look forward to an end to these wasteful lawsuits.
Meanwhile, we will continue to work with organizations across the state to encourage voters to apply to serve on Michigan’s first Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and to encourage community members to get ready to offer maps and testimony before the commission next year.”
Oral arguments in this case are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
