Commission Finishes State Senate Draft Map

The commission has completed its first draft map of State Senate districts. This was completed after commissioners reconciled districts in Southeast Michigan to accommodate for race and population data, as well as districts in West Michigan to include Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Portage, and other surrounding suburbs in one State Senate district. The commission also drew an alternative draft map that split Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, and Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti into separate districts.

The commission had originally planned to draw Congressional districts on Monday, September 13th. However, their work had been delayed due to increased deliberation of metro Detroit State Senate districts. Instead, they will continue drawing alternative State Senate drafts and begin drawing Congressional districts at tomorrow’s meeting.
