Every Michigan voter who chooses to exercise their constitutional right to vote absentee by mailing their ballot through the U.S. Postal Service should have their vote counted. It is unacceptable that these political tactics are being used to suppress the vote, even after the Postmaster General committed to halting changes to the postal service before the November election.
We are working alongside other organizations in the state to make sure Michigan voters know the facts about absentee voting and the options they have to return their ballots. We need the state Legislature to do its part to protect our elections by taking action to ensure ballots are counted accurately and efficiently, including passing HB 5987 in the face of unprecedented federal meddling that would allow ballots postmarked by election day to be counted up to 48 hours after the election.
Voters Not Politicians recently launched the VoteSafe campaign to urge the state legislature to take action to facilitate absentee voting in Michigan to protect public health and the integrity of our elections, while updating our voting system to make sure it is accessible for decades to come.
