The following can be attributed to Nancy Wang, Executive Director of Voters Not Politicians, on the updates to preliminary demographic, geographic, and party affiliation data of applicants to Michigan’s first Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission released today by the Michigan Department of State:
“During these difficult times it’s clearer than ever how important it is to have a functioning democracy that works for the people. We’re encouraged by the thousands of voters who are stepping up to serve on Michigan’s first Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, which will lead a public process to redraw the state’s election district maps in 2021. Voters Not Politicians continues to work remotely with partners and community organizations to build a large and diverse applicant pool. With an eye toward the future, we’re also working now on educational efforts and tools to empower citizens to provide effective testimony to the Commission once it is seated.”
Voters Not Politicians has launched a digital advertising campaign to encourage voters to apply for the Commission. During the COVID-19 crisis, VNP is hosting online application workshops with community organizations.
