Your representation in Michigan’s state government is determined by what district you live in. When you vote for a state senator, your district determines who works on behalf of your community in Lansing. Districts are now created by Michigan’s Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.

Redistricting is the process by which election district maps are determined. In 2018, Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment (Proposal 18-2) to create Michigan’s Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, a body of Michigan citizens — not politicians — who draw Michigan’s election district maps using a fair, impartial, and transparent process. Voters Not Politicians is the nonprofit organization who led a people-powered movement to put Proposal 18-2 on the ballot. Voters Not Politicians led an effort to recruit Michigan citizens to apply to serve on Michigan’s Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. When the public comment period opened for Michigan’s initial maps, Voters Not Politicians led an effort to make sure Michigan citizens could participate and provide meaningful public comment.
