You know by now how important this election is, and what Voters Not Politicians is doing to protect our democracy as pro-voters advocates. But do you know why hundreds of our volunteers are working so hard to support pro-democracy reforms and candidates right now?
Here is why our volunteers put so many hours into canvassing for democracy, in their own words:
“Why do I canvass? Because I need to feel that I am contributing to a solution for this very big problem. Doing nothing is NOT an option for me. When I first began I wasn’t very confident but I kept going out and now it’s almost second nature.”

Canvassing is a great way to reach voters and really connect with them, so they understand just how important this election is.
I believe that canvassing is an effective way of moving the needle to get Prop 2 over the finish line. I have great confidence in the wisdom of how the voters are selected to be contacted. Over and over again the conversation begins with “I don’t know about this proposal.” And it ends with “Yes, I’ll vote for that!” Even the times that no one comes to the door provide the opportunity to leave literature that informs these critically important voters about our cause.

Plus, it’s a lot of fun, and in many ways easier than something like petition circulating or even phone banking!
This year I was a little nervous about canvassing but soon learned there was nothing to worry about. I have yet to meet anyone who made me nervous. All the conversations were cordial. I always feel like I’ve made a difference after canvassing. It’s very satisfying.

I find that this is easier than petitioning and I am always glad that I did it after I’m done with a shift.

My favorite conversations are the ones that end up convincing people to support the proposal but every once in a while I run across people who have contributed to VNP or know someone who is a volunteer. Once, I had someone stop me as soon as mentioned that I am a VNP volunteer and told me that she was in favor of whatever I was promoting simply because VNP was behind it!

And here is what canvassers want to say to any volunteer activists who haven’t yet joined our final Get Out the Vote drive:
If you gathered signatures over the spring and summer be assured that canvassing is MUCH easier and enjoyable and you will have the fringe benefit of getting some exercise in the process!”

I’d say to a volunteer who is sitting on the fence to go out with a veteran. Watch and listen then begin to talk with voters. It’s easier than you think and very satisfying.
