When Michigan’s first Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission approved a set of election maps, election experts all agreed: Michigan finally had fairer maps. Fair maps meant voters could choose their politicians, not the other way around, and in turn, could hold their politicians accountable instead of settling for politicians who weren’t listening to them.
Voters have the constitutional right and power to hold their politicians accountable at the ballot box during elections. However, in order for voters to do this, they have to be informed of what their elected officials are up to and how they are voting on bills important to their voters.
Voters Not Politicians has built a powerful legislative accountability program that focuses on our pro-democracy and pro-voter values.
Through voter education and volunteer mobilization, we’re ensuring that voters feel empowered and informed ahead of elections so they can vote for candidates that align with their values on the issues they care about.

Voters deserve to know where their elected representatives stand on the pro-democracy issues that matter most to them, but tracking legislation and voting records is a time-intensive process.
That’s why Voters Not Politicians created a first-of-its-kind Pro-Democracy Scorecard.
You can view our last scorecard for the 102nd Michigan Legislature (2023-2024) here.
The Pro-Democracy Legislative Scorecard details how each member of the Michigan Legislature voted on pro-democracy legislation.
Our Scorecard for the 102nd Michigan Legislature tracked these four categories:
Elected representatives must be accountable to the constituents they serve and act in their interests. Voters Not Politicians ensures voters know which Michigan candidates they can trust to stand up for democracy through our Pro-Voter Endorsement process.
Endorsed pro-voter candidates must meet several qualifications:
A committee of volunteers and staff evaluates candidates for Michigan offices, completing research into their public statements, endorsements, funders and, in the case of incumbents, voting records.
Voters Not Politicians trains local teams of volunteers and supplies them with literature and supplies to canvass voters and educate them about where candidates on their ballot stand on democracy, voting, and election issues.
This allows volunteers to inform their neighbors on pro-democracy, pro-voter candidates ahead of elections so they have the information and education they need before heading to the ballot box.
Voters Not Politicians knows that mass, grassroots mobilization is an effective way to advocate for legislation and, when the time comes, to hold politicians accountable.
During the 2024 Lame Duck session, Voters Not Politicians hosted an emergency Pro-Democracy Lobby Day at the Michigan Capitol Building in Lansing.
More than 150 volunteers attended to advocate for critical pro-democracy legislation, including the Michigan Voting Rights Act, National Popular Vote, lobbyist reform, ending prison gerrymandering, and campaign finance reform.
Voters Not Politicians volunteers conducted over 100 meetings and drop-ins with legislators and their staff during Lobby Day.

In April 2025, Voters Not Politicians organized our biggest Day of Action yet in response to the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote on the SAVE Act.
The SAVE Act aims to make it harder for Michigan voters to participate in federal elections by requiring documentary proof of citizenship upon registration to vote and also when voters change their address to update their voter registration.
We hosted Stop the SAVE Act rallies outside of several congressional district offices (including the 7 Republican representatives who voted for the SAVE Act).
